MA in Contemporary Asian & Asian American Studies Student Testimonials
Veronica Peck
MS in Contemporary Asian and Asian American StudiesMeet Veronica Peck, an MA student in Contemporary Asian and Asian American Studies at Stony Brook!
I chose this program because it aligns with my passion for language learning and teaching. My research focuses on remote language learning—specifically, developing speaking and listening skills online.
Though I’ve only been here a short time, I’m already enjoying the coursework, insightful feedback from instructors, and the supportive environment. I hope to connect more with the community, improve my Japanese, gain professional experience, and create language-learning resources like conversation groups.
Before SBU, I earned my BA in Asian Studies from SUNY New Paltz in 2021, focusing on Japanese. Studying abroad in Japan during the pandemic sparked my interest in remote language learning. After graduation, I worked as a Professional Tutor at Fulton Montgomery Community College before continuing my studies.
Currently, I’m a Graduate Assistant at the Academic Success and Tutoring Center. Outside academics, I enjoy Crochet Club events and hope to join the English Pal program.
Being a first-generation student has been challenging—navigating financial aid, networking, and career development took research and persistence. My advice for students:
- Don’t fear the blank page. Bad first drafts are part of learning.
- Use your resources. Asking for help is a strength.
- Master research skills. They help in academics and life.
- Be kind to yourself. Avoid self-criticism and burnout.
- Get involved. College is more than coursework—join clubs and attend events.
I’m excited for what’s ahead and grateful to be part of the Stony Brook community!
