Associate Professor/Professor or Clinical Associate Professor/Clinical Professor

Required Qualifications

The Associate Dean will have earned an advanced doctoral degree, PharmD, or PhD in a pharmacy-related discipline; at least three years of academic administrative experience at the level of Department Chair, Assistant or Associate Dean, and seven years relevant experience in Pharmacy education.  Documented accomplishments in teaching, scholarship, and service commensurate with the standards to be appointed as a tenured Associate or Full Professor at Stony Brook Medicine.  The area of scholarly activity for the successful candidate is open, but must be appropriate for the position and include (i) a consistent record of peer-reviewed publications and scholarly presentations;(ii) demonstrated or growing leadership abilities; (iii) accreditation as a Team-based Learning Collaborative (TBLC) consultant; and (iv) a strong commitment towards meeting or exceeding Stony Brook Standards of excellence in student success.

The candidate should have significant experience in curricular development, implementation, assessment and quality improvement of a professional program; possess an in-depth knowledge of pharmacy education; interpersonal and communication skills to effectively establish working relationships with faculty, staff, senior leadership, and students across the health sciences center; experience with team-based learning methods, inter-professional education and integration of curricular content; strong interpersonal and organizational skills; and, a detailed working knowledge of accreditation standards as they relate to pharmacy education.

Excellent written, verbal and communication skills.  Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scholarly and technical journals, financial reports, and legal and regulatory documents related to the position's essential duties and responsibilities.  Ability to respond orally or in writing to common inquiries or complaints from stakeholders, including regulatory and accrediting agencies, faculty, staff, students, and members of the profession of pharmacy and other business entities.  Ability to effectively present information to individuals at all levels, ranging from students attending K-12 schools, to members of boards of directors and legislators.  

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions to solve problems and plan initiatives.  Ability to organize and analyze data to improve the quality of student learning.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of current professional trends in pharmacy practice as they relate to curricular aspects of SPPS.  Knowledge of current trends in outcomes assessments strategies.  Utility of these knowledge bases to relate curricular aspects of the program to outcomes assessment.  Experience with interprofessional education and previous experience with professional development in pedagogy and learning theories, teaching methods, and integration of curricular content.  The preferred candidate also would have experience with interdisciplinary education, especially with development of team-based learning in pharmacy and medical schools.  The ideal candidate would also have an advanced degree and/or experience in program evaluation, assessment, measurement, educational research, or a related field.

Responsibilities & Requirements

The Stony Brook University (SBU) School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPPS), located in Stony Brook, NY, invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean for Teaching, Learning and Assessment. This position provides the candidate with the opportunity to join a leadership team that will build a new School of Pharmacy, including recruiting and mentoring founding faculty, developing the curriculum and creating a unique program that educates exceptional pharmacy practitioners that meet or exceed Stony Brook Medicine standards of excellence. The successful candidate will provide leadership for developing and implementing the SPPS’s teaching and learning vision and continuous quality improvement for the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree program. The Associate Dean also works with the appropriate health science center offices to ensure that the SPPS’s programs align with the mission of Stony Brook Medicine. The Associate Dean is a key member of the SPPS’s Executive Committee and reports directly to the Dean.  The Associate Dean for Teaching, Learning and Assessment is a twelve-month appointment. 

The Associate Dean has essential duties and responsibilities in three areas vital to the success of the SPPS.  Second, the incumbent has primary responsibility for assessment of the SPPS’s programmatic and curricular missions.  Finally, the successful candidate will lead efforts to build and deliver a unique and advanced professional curriculum.  The SPPS is located within a comprehensive health sciences center at Stony Brook Medicine with medical, baccalaureate and doctor of nursing, dental medicine, physician assistant, and other affiliated health professional programs.  Classes will be integrated using a team-based learning pedagogy with medical students.  The plan is for the first class of students to matriculate in August 2018.

Teaching and Learning:

  • Collaborate and mentor faculty in curriculum development, implementation, delivery, assessment and continuous quality improvement in teaching and learning.
  • Identify pedagogical leaders and establish inter-professional education teams within the SPPS and Stony Brook Medicine to accomplish curriculum development, teaching and learning goals.
  • Serve in a leadership role in the identification, evaluation and use of leading edge technologies that support the pedagogical, teaching and learning principles of the SPPS and Stony Brook Medicine.
  • Collaborative with the Associate Dean for Academic and Student affairs and department chairs in the oversight of daily logistics of implementation of the curriculum in support of the curriculum's teaching and learning goals. 
  • In collaboration with the Associate dean for Academic and Student Affairs, support faculty with structured professional development to enhance faculty and student learning success.
  • Provide leadership to those engaged in professional education delivery, such as instructional designers and teaching specialists, to support the school's pedagogical team-based learning principles and meet or exceed the educational standards of the SPPS and Stony Brook Medicine.

Programmatic and Curricular Assessment:

  • Ensures that both programmatic and curricular assessment activities meet or exceed accreditation requirements.
  • Conduct and summarize the results of routine, reliable and valid programmatic and curricular assessments for stakeholder/constituent review and evaluation.
  • Improve admission decisions by using pre-pharmacy indicators of student success in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, use assessment data to ameliorate poor performance of students, faculty, staff or administrators that are the result of cultural and/or environmental factors to allow a meaningful response to individual or community concerns.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, use assessment and continuous quality improvement strategies to ensure achievement of student progression and retention goals.
  • Identify and routinely monitor performance on internal and external educational, co-curricular and institutional outcome competencies.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, prepare confidential reports of student performance for use by faculty advisors and the Office of Academic and Student Affairs to improve student progression and retention.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises the professional and clerical personnel assigned to the Office of the Associate Dean. Responsibilities include assigning work, evaluating performance, and rewarding or disciplining employees who report directly to the Associate Dean, as well as addressing complaints and resolving problems; 5 years or more experience in the supervision of professional staff.

Special Notes

Tenure/Non-Tenure Track.  Eligibility for tenure will be based upon applicants' qualifications and experience.  To qualify for tenure and/or a senior faculty appointment, the candidate must meet the criteria established by the School of Medicine (School of Medicine's Criteria for Appointment, Promotion and Tenure). FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.  Anticipated Start Date: 4/1/2018.
