Dr. Jessica Chen is a Lecturer in the Institute for STEM Education at Stony Brook University. She teaches courses and advises students in the M.A.T. and Ph.D. in STEM Education programs. Her scholarship is grounded in issues of equity, diversity, and social justice in science teacher education. Her recent research focuses on designing and examining multicultural coursework and field experiences that support preservice teachers’ political clarity, antiracist dispositions and commitments to teaching science, and justice-oriented science teaching. Her previous work examined the justice-oriented science teacher identity and agency of elementary teachers as they participate in professional development and preservice teacher preparation programs. Dr. Chen provided professional development to several community schools in New York City and New Jersey to support department and school-wide science and STEAM initiatives. Prior to her appointment at Stony Brook University, Dr. Chen was a Lecturer at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she also received her Ed.D. in Science Education and completed her post-doctoral studies. She started her journey in science education as a secondary science teacher in New York City.
