Progress at The New York Climate Exchange
March 13, 2025
Dear Stony Brook Campus Community,
When Stony Brook announced with great honor and excitement that we had been selected as the anchor institution for The New York Climate Exchange in April 2023, this accomplishment spoke to so many remarkable assets in our university. A project of this size and impact takes time to visualize and, ultimately, to build into a reality. It has been an ongoing and close collaboration with our broad network of partners across academia, industry, communities and government. And now, nearly two years later, it is exciting to share the latest design for the Hub – the build-out of Governors Island – as well as to update our campus community on the progress that has been made since the announcement of our bold vision for addressing the effects of climate change.
The urgency and ambition of The Exchange have grown during the last two years. The need for a global hub for climate change research, innovation, solutions and policy discussion is stronger than ever. Our role as the anchor institution for The New York Climate Exchange on Governors Island will be transformative not only for our university, but also for the future of sustainability in New York.
I encourage you to check The Exchange’s website and LinkedIn page for updates on programs and events. If you are interested in hearing from The Exchange, you can also sign up for the monthly newsletter. And on April 29, anyone interested will have the opportunity to join the Collaborative for the Earth to visit Governors Island and learn what’s in store for this awe-inspiring space!
Above all, I invite you to read the March 2025 Update on Progress at The New York Climate Exchange to discover the latest activities, what’s coming next and other ways to get involved in this momentous project.
Sincerely,
Richard L. McCormick
Interim President
