NSF Partnerships for Innovation (PFI) Program

OVPR is actively accepting applications for this internal competition. If you are interested in applying to this program, you must submit a pre-application through the internal competitions submission portal. Pre-application requirements are listed in the announcement below.

OVPR invites applications for the Partnerships for Innovation (PFI) Program, which offers researchers from all disciplines of science and engineering funded by NSF the opportunity to perform translational research and technology development, catalyze partnerships and accelerate the transition of discoveries from the laboratory to the marketplace for societal benefit. Stony Brook University may submit ONE application to the Research Partnerships (PFI-RP) track. There is no limit to the number of proposals that can be submitted to the Technology Translation (PFI-TT) track.

Please see below for details. If you are interested in applying to the PFI-RP track, you must submit the internal competitions form by Wednesday, February 28, 2024. Pre-applications for internal review and selection must be uploaded to the portal as a single PDF document. The competition code for this program is LC202413.

WHAT DOES IT FUND: The PFI-RP track supports complex, multi-faceted technology development projects that are typically beyond the scope of a single researcher or institution and require a multi-organizational, interdisciplinary, synergistic collaboration.

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS

  • The PI must have the technical skills required to lead and execute the proposed research project.
  • PFI-RP proposals must include, without exception, a co-PI who is a member or employee of the required Industrial Partner organization. PFI-RP proposals without an Industrial Partner co-PI may be returned without review.
  • NSF Lineage Requirement: All proposals submitted to the PFI program must meet a lineage requirement by having NSF-supported research results in all fields of science and engineering: Principal Investigator (PI) or a co-PI must have had an NSF award that ended no more than seven (7) years prior to the full proposal deadline date or be a current NSF award recipient. The proposed technology development project must be derived from the research results and/or discoveries from this underlying NSF award.

AWARD: PFI-RP projects will be funded for up to $1,000,000 for 36 months.

SPONSOR DEADLINE: May 7, 2024

A complete pre-application should comprise of the following:

  • Project Summary (no more than 1 page)
  • Project Description (2-3 pages)
  • Biosketches for all key personnel (no more than 2 pages per investigator)
  • Budget Justification (no more than 1 page)
  • Letter of collaboration from industry partner. At this stage of competition, letters of collaboration may be informal communications (email is fine) from industry partners stating that they will participate in the project if selected to advance.
