SBU Forum Examines Long Island's Solid Waste Future
Long Island elected officials and solid waste experts will gather on March 15 at Stony Brook University to discuss the future of how Long Island will address its waste, incorporate new recycling and waste technologies, and fund needed infrastructure.
The 2023 Larry Swanson Long Island Environmental Symposium is presented by the Evan R. Liblit Memorial Scholarship Committee, which in addition to providing scholarships at Stony Brook, hosts events and webinars aimed at improving recycling and solid waste management. The Evan R. Liblit Memorial Fund supports graduate students at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences Waste Reduction and Management Institute.
The event will feature a roundtable discussion on future solid waste needs with five Long Island Town Supervisors — Edward Romaine (Brookhaven), Donald Clavin (Hempstead), Richard Schaeffer (Babylon), Angie Carpenter (Islip), and Edward Wehrheim (Smithtown), along with two senior New York State Department of Environmental Conservation officials, Rick Clarkson and David Vitale. It will be moderated by John Cameron, chair of the Long Island Regional Planning Council.
Other topics to be discussed include “What Carbon Net Zero Waste-to-Energy Will Look Like,” “Will Large-Scale Food Waste Composting Become a Reality?” and “Financial Opportunities for New Solid Waste Infrastructure,” each with experts in their fields.
