Subject: How to Help Students When You Have a Concern

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Professional staff and faculty members are often the first to notice a student in distress, which is why we have developed a clear and comprehensive website — the Red Book — with important and helpful information to guide you on how to best help students in need.

You can find the Red Book at stonybrook.edu/redbook. We suggest you bookmark this page, so you can more easily access it whenever you need to consult it.

What kind of information will I find in the Red Book?
The Red Book includes signs to look for and how to respond to student situations including emotional distress, disruptive behavior, medical emergency, or other concern that requires support or intervention. Information is provided on resources to contact, including the University Police DepartmentStudent Conduct and Community StandardsCARE TeamCounseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Student Support Team, and more.

How can I let someone know about a student of concern?
Familiarize yourself with the link at the top of the Red Book called "Report a Student of Concern."  In an emergency, call University Police at (631) 632-3333 (333 from a campus phone). For all other situations, send an email to care@stonybrook.edu or call (631) 632-CARE (2273) during regular business hours (M-F, 9 am-5 pm). A team member will provide you and/or the students for whom there is a concern with guidance and assistance.

Who can I contact after hours to consult about a student?
The CAPS Crisis Line is available for you to consult with a crisis counselor if you need to speak with someone about a student outside of business hours (M-F, 9am-5pm). Call (631) 632-6720 and press 2 to speak with a counselor. You may also call the CAPS Crisis Line directly at (855) 509-5742.

What health, wellness, and prevention services are available for students?
The Health, Wellness, and Prevention Services team offers comprehensive support as noted below. Please feel free to contact or refer students to our team members for help.
Is there 24/7 care available to students?
