Race and Ethnicity

Study abroad is an exciting journey and prompts individuals to wonder what their experience might be like. There are many things to consider. Cities and communities around the world have unique racial and ethnic demographics. Perceptions of ethnicity and race may vary significantly. We encourage students to reflect on their own identity and think about how to connect with others that identify similarly to them as well as how to find a sense of belonging with others who perceive identity differently. It is important to understand how the host country defines and embraces different races and ethnicities. Cross-cultural differences are an important component of the education abroad experience. Our study abroad coordinators are here for students to talk about how to become aware, plan and direct students to useful resources so that every student can have a successful and fulfilling experience.

Things to Consider

How do I decide which location will be best for me?

How does my prospective study abroad location define race and ethnicity?

Are there any stereotypes/perceptions of my race/ethnicity?

How will the perception of my race/ethnicity shape my experience abroad?

Are there any laws governing race relations/ethnicities?

How will I react if I encounter racism or other discriminatory behavior?

How would I feel/react if when out in the community locals or others were taking obvious notice of my physical appearance such as staring, touching, approaching, asking questions, etc.?
