Joseph G. Gavin Jr.

In 1962, Gavin was elected a vice president and given direction of the lunar module program, the Project Apollo spacecraft that carried astronauts from moon orbit to the moon's surface and back into orbit. In 1968, he was named director of space programs. He was elected a director of Grumman Aerospace Corporation in May 1969, promoted to senior vice president in February 1970 and elected president of the company in July 1972.

In April 1973, he was elected chairman of the board of Grumman Aerospace Corporation, retaining the position of president.

On January 1, 1976, he was elected president of the parent company Grumman Corporation. In February 1985, Gavin became chairman of the excutive committee of the board of directors until his retirement on September 30, 1985. He still serves the company as a senior managment consultant.

Gavin was born in Somerville, Mass., on September 18, 1920.
