Yacov Shamash

Yacov Shamash has served as Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Stony Brook University since 1992 and Vice President for Economic Development since 2000. No one has made more extensive contributions to Long Island’s ongoing transition from one of the nation’s most defense aerospace-dependent economic regions to a diverse and vibrant high technology regional economy. His career has been marked by firsts –

       As Dean:

o    First three National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers at Stony Brook – in analog-digital integrated circuits, information assurance and bioenergy R&D

o    First New York campus with two NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers

o    First New York campus with two state Centers for Advanced Technology

o    First SUNYwide engineering collaboration, creating the SPIR (Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence) program, which has assisted more than 425 companies through more than 2,240 projects, helping them to get more than $100 million in funding and to save or retain a projected total exceeding 12,100 jobs

       As Vice President:

o    First – and only – New York State Center of Excellence in downstate New York, in wireless and information technology, the first building in the Stony Brook Research & Development Park, and most recently

o    First and only multidisciplinary Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center, which has given birth to–

·         New York State Smart Grid Consortium, an unprecedented collaboration of utilities, research, academia, government, regulators, and vendor industries, and

·         New York Energy Policy Institute, unique in the nation for joining technology depth with policy expertise

o    First LEED certification training programs on Long Island in collaboration with the U.S. Green Buildings Council

o    First single-technology focused incubators for new venture development in wireless and IT, cleantech and technologies compatible with Long Island’s East End

 Dr. Shamash received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Imperial College of Science and Technology in London and held faculty positions at Washington State University, where he was Director of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Florida Atlantic University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Tel Aviv University. A Fellow of the IEEE, he has authored more than 130 publications. Serving on the board of the New York State Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) and the New York State Smart Grid Consortium,  Yacov also sits on the boards of numerous industry associations and private corporations, including the Long Island Software & Technology Network (LISTnet), the Long Island Forum for Technology (LIFT), Keytronic, American Medical Alert, The United Way of Long Island, a Trustee on the Board of the New York Blood Center, and speaks to national and international audiences about the critical role of research universities in economic growth.
