On Campus Volunteer Opportunities
There are many opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to get involved in volunteer positions and service projects at Stony Brook University. To learn about additional opportunities, check out GivePulse.
The Campus Community Emergency Response Team (C-CERT) is an off-shoot of FEMA’s Citizen Corps’ CERT program, designed to mold CERT’s basic principles to an academic institution setting. CERTs are formed by members of a community who want to be better prepared for the hazards that threaten their area. Every semester, students, faculty and staff can volunteer with C-CERT and work to enhance the preparedness of citizens and first responders on campus.
The Stony Brook University Food Pantry serves community members (students, staff and faculty) who are food insecure, or who are at risk of food insecurity. We are committed to being a reliable and stable supplemental food source while providing resources to overcome food insecurity. Volunteers at the Food Pantry assist with daily operations and management. This position typically calls for a semester-long commitment, at minimum.
The Faculty Student Association (FSA) and CulinArt has partnered with the Food Recovery Network, a national nonprofit that helps fight food waste and hunger by recovering perishable food that would otherwise go to waste and donates it to those in need. The Food Recovery Network is the largest student movement fighting against food waste and hunger, donating more than 3.9 million pounds of food, feeding 3.2 million meals and preventing more than 6.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide from reaching the environment. Student volunteers recover surplus food from CulinArt and transport it to hunger-fighting partner agencies. To get involved, check out their website.
The Long Island State Veterans Home has emerged as one of Long Island's premiere providers of long-term skilled nursing services and adult day health care and has compassionately cared for more than 10,000 United States veterans. The mission of the Long Island State Veterans Home is twofold. First, to provide the highest quality and most comprehensive health care services to Long Islands veterans, and second, to serve as a model site for research, and the education and training of tomorrow’s long-term care and geriatric professionals. Our volunteers offer an extra dimension of care and service to the resident veterans, empathy for families and visitors, and supportive services for staff. Having the opportunity to give back to those who fought to preserve our freedom and democracy in America is a rewarding and honorable experience. No previous experience is necessary to make a difference. Our volunteers are provided orientation and training to be successful in their positions. When possible we offer flexibility with schedules and no weekly commitment.

The Stony Brook Child Care Center is open Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., with various shifts available, and serves University, Health Sciences and Medical Center faculty staff and students as well as non-affiliated community families. The Center is staffed by full-time professionals, assisted by part-time support staff and University students enrolled in the Psychology 488 Internship. Their primary aim is to provide a warm, supportive and creative atmosphere. Each room is "family-grouped", enabling children to interact with others of different ages. Since children at this stage of their development "learn by doing," there are plenty of hands-on activities that at times build a child's self-reliance. Volunteers work alongside professional teaching staff in a facility designed and equipped for very young children for as few as 3 hours a week.
The Stony Brook Stitchers volunteer their time, energy, and creativity to lovingly create items for those in physical, emotional, or spiritual need. Stony Brook Stitchers originated over 10+ years ago and is proud to donate handmade baby & adult hats, lap blankets, Afghans, christening outfits, prayer shawls, memory pouches, and baby caps to patients at Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Cancer Center, and the Long Island State Veterans Home. Students, faculty, staff of Stony Brook University & Hospital as well as community volunteer groups are welcome to participate in the Stony Brook Stitchers. If you love to knit, crochet, sew, or quilt, please consider joining the Stony Brook Stitchers.
