Fellowship to Promote Diversity in Economics
Fellowship Mission
Stony Brook University Department of Economics is deeply committed to the recruitment
and
success of a diverse graduate student community. Thanks to the generosity of one of
our
economics Ph.D. alumnae, we offer this Graduate Fellowship Program for qualified historically
underrepresented students pursuing a doctoral degree in our economics program. Our
mission is to empower Fellows to assume their roles and responsibilities as future
leaders, educators, and researchers.
Fellowship Funding
- Stipend: $75,000 (over 5 years)+ regular funding $15,000 + $26,000 = $41,000 annual stipend.
- Base stipend of $26,000 will be effective 10/1/2023
- Reduced Teaching: 2nd semester in 3rd year, 2nd semester in 4th year, full 5th year.
- Our Goal: We are committed to onboarding 15 new Diversity Fellows into our Ph.D. Program within the next 5 years.
Eligibility
- Admission to Stony Brook University Department of Economics Ph.D. Program
- Belonging to an historically underrepresented group in the field of economics, including minorities and women
- US Citizen or Permanent Resident
Qualifications
- High GPA with a strong quantitative background and interest
- Strong academic record and background in mathematics
- Calculus
- Linear Algebra
- Real Analysis
- High score on GRE Quantitative
- Supportive letters of recommendation
- Strong personal statement

Turner Fellowship
Incoming Ph.D. Students in our program may be eligible to be nominated for a Turner
Fellowship.
