Dr. Yong Chen is a Professor of Marine Science at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University. His research focuses on quantitative fisheries ecology, fisheries stock assessment and management. Much of Dr. Chen’s work is interdisciplinary, involving fisheries ecology, mathematical and statistical modeling, computer simulations and management policy. His research interests include developing fisheries stock assessment models; evaluating fisheries population dynamics, habitats, environmental impacts and climate vulnerability; designing fisheries monitoring programs; and evaluating fisheries management strategies. Dr. Chen curates the Hudson River Biological Monitoring Program database and biological collections gifted to Stony Brook University with over 50 million of fish samples collected in the Hudson Rover ecosystem from 1974 to 2020.   

Dr. Chen received his PhD in Zoology and Statistics (minor) in 1995 from the University of Toronto. Prior to the SUNY Stony Brook, He worked at the University of Maine, Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada, and New South Wales Fisheries Department in Australia. 

Dr. Chen is the Editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (CJFAS), and a current member of the New England Fisheries Management Council’s Scientific and Statistical Committee. His 290+ peer-reviewed publications have appeared in journals such as CJFAS, ICES Journal of Marine Science, Fisheries Research, PNAS, Aquatic Ecology, Ecological Indicators, Fishery Bulletin, Marine Biology, Ecological Modeling, Marine Policy, Freshwater and Marine Research, and Ecology and Society.
