AI in your hands at IACS

Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolutionizes personalized experiences, analyzing data to tailor methods, fostering engagement, and streamlining tasks. It empowers efficiency and outcomes in a digital age. Providing university researchers and students with paid access to ChatGPT is essential for maintaining a competitive edge in research and preparing students for future career success in an increasingly AI-driven world. This access ensures that both researchers and students are adept at utilizing modern AI technologies, which are crucial for advancing academic inquiry and equipping the next generation with the skills necessary to thrive in the technological landscape of the future.

IACS wants to support you in the effective use of AI tools. That’s why we are excited to inform you of several important updates and new resources that are now available to our institute's members. These developments are intended to support and enhance our research and educational activities.

  1. Introduction of ChatGPT Team Plan: The Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS) has procured the ChatGPT Team plan, which will be accessible to all core and affiliate researchers, including faculty, staff, and students. This tool is intended to aid in various research and administrative tasks. The IACS subscription will start with 25 accounts for one year and additional accounts to the plan as needed, up to a maximum of 150 people. Accounts will be evaluated for utilization on an annual basis, with inactive accounts being reallocated to ensure optimal resource use and appropriate usage of the annual cost of $300 per person. To be added to this plan, please contact  Chelsey Dollinger (chelsey.dollinger@stonybrook.edu). The previous approach of reimbursing monthly subscriptions to AI tools will be terminated at the end of March --- please migrate your ChatGPT account to the IACS team account and plan accordingly for any other services.
  2. OpenAI API Availability: As of last summer, the OpenAI API is available to all core and affiliate researchers (including students) at the IACS, with a total monthly usage cap of $1000. This initiative is designed to facilitate research and development in AI and machine learning, providing essential computational resources for these purposes. Once you have created your own OpenAI accounthere, please contact Chelsey Dollinger (chelsey.dollinger@stonybrook.edu) to connect your account to IACS for billing. Like the ChatGPT Team plan, the IACS OpenAI API account will be assessed annually to determine whether our usage justifies the continued expenditure, ensuring responsible and effective allocation of resources.
  3. Access to GitHub Copilot for Educators and Students: Through the Global Campus program, GitHub Copilot is available for free to educators (including faculty and staff) and students within our campus. GitHub Copilot functions as an AI-based coding assistant, offering real-time suggestions and code snippets. This tool can significantly enhance productivity and learning in coding projects. For step-by-step instructions on how to apply to the Global Campus program, see the following links:

  4. Preliminary Planning for GPU-Enabled AI Computational Initiative: The campus administration is currently in the early stages of developing a new GPU-enabled AI computational initiative. This project is currently assessing use cases and the scale of need, and plans to support both research and education, with an emphasis on inference at scale and training.  If you have some specific needs, please contact David Cyrille (David.Cyrille@stonybrookmedicine.edu).
