Sydney Corwin (she/her) is a senior majoring in journalism with a minor in creative writing. She is an editor for the Stony Brook Press. She has also been a communications assistant for the Dean’s Office in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and a news intern at WSHU Public Radio. Sydney is looking forward to being on the SoCJ Student Advisory Board and hopes to positively represent the students and foster a better sense of community within the school.

Janet Chow (she/her), a senior Journalism major and is currently a morning show host on Stony Brook's WUSB 90.1 FM. Chow brings her vibrant personality to promote mental health, positivity, and AAPI representation to her listeners. Through internships at WSHU Public Radio, WNEW 102.7, and SXM Pandora, she has gained valuable broadcasting experience. Chow is a SoCJ Student Advisory Board member seeking to build a sense of community and represent her fellow mass communication and journalism students.

Viola is a third-year journalism major graduating this May. She is the Editor in Chief of The Statesman and President of the Student Blood Drive Committee. She is currently an intern at NBC Dateline and previously interned for NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and Times/Review Media Group on the North Fork. In her free time, Viola likes to spend time with her family and friends back home in Waterbury, CT, try new coffee shops and read bad romance novels.

Tim Giorlando (he/him/his) is a senior Honors College student with a passion for storytelling, the arts and research. His time at Stony Brook University has been vast and deep, being a Residential Assistant for three years and contributing to the Undergraduate Student Government, the Center for Civic Justice and numerous other organizations on campus. Last year, Tim was the Multimedia Editor for The Statesman, an undergraduate newspaper on campus, where he honed his photography and graphic design portfolio. For his final year, he hopes to continue his tenure on the SOCJ Advisory Board by assisting in recruitment initiatives to the new communications programs offered at the school.

Melanie Karniewich is a junior Journalism major with a minor in Film and Screen Studies. Melanie is a part of Her Campus at Stony Brook, serving as Vice President, and is a Communications Intern for the Stony Brook Career Center. Her love of story-telling has encouraged her to find a home within SoCJ, and she hopes her work with the Student Advisory Board will help other students feel the same way.

Anastasia Poulos (she/her) is a senior double majoring in Journalism and Political Science. She is very active on campus, serving as the President of the Stony Brook Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and a member of the Stony Brook Media Group. Anastasia is excited to serve on the SoCJ Student Advisory Board to represent the student body and develop the school into a fantastic learning atmosphere filled with many opportunities.
Miles Reese

Miles Reese is a sophomore journalism major and is also an entertainment reporter on “The Media Minute” segment for the SBU Media Group. Miles is also the recipient of the Stony Brook Greene Summer Institute Next Generation scholarship. He advocates for newsroom diversity and has a deep passion for storytelling. Miles also has a strong musical background and is an active member of The Spirit of Stony Brook Marching Band where he plays the saxophone and the flute.

Ben's passion for creative storytelling extends beyond academics, as he serves as a Creative Assistant for Stony Brook Athletics, where he creates engaging videos that capture the spirit of our student athletes. Ben is eager to continue honing his skills in Mass Communications, sharing his love for the natural world, and contributing to campus life. Ben is thrilled to be a part of the SoCJ Student Advisory Board, where he eagerly steps into the role to advocate for the student body.
