History
Stony Brook University is home to several diverse art galleries and spaces that exhibit
art. The university has a long tradition of curating and hosting exhibitions of emerging,
renowned, faculty, and student artists dating back to the mid-1960s. It also has permanent
works of art installed in both interior spaces and outside amongst the grounds.
The first gallery on the Stony Brook campus was housed in the Humanities building, which was one of the first buildings to be built. Later, gallery spaces were created in the library and the Stony Brook Union.
The gallery in the Fine Arts Building was established in 1975 when the building was
opened; it was named the Fine Arts Center Art Gallery. On October 22, 1988, the name
was changed to the University Art Gallery. This change coincided with the renaming
of the Fine Arts Building to the Staller Center for the Arts. On April 4, 2013 in
appreciation of the generosity of university benefactors Alice Zuccaire and the Paul
W. Zuccaire Foundation, this gallery was dedicated and renamed the Paul W. Zuccaire
Gallery.
