STARTALK 2015
What is STARTALK?
The Language Learning Research Center (LLRC) at Stony Brook University is proud to host its second STARTALK program for high school juniors/seniors, and college students. The program provides an opportunity to earn 6 college credits in just 7 weeks through intensive introductions to Arabic, Korean, Persian and Turkish. The courses are designed to teach the language to novice-level learners through student-centered, creative, interpersonal, presentational, and interpretive tasks which allow students to build speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as intercultural competence. In addition to daily instruction, this summer program features organized field trips to relevant cultural sites, guest speakers on topics which tie into our theme, and film screenings.

Note: The STARTALK 2015 Program at Stony Brook is a non-residential program. Students are advised to manage their own housing and transportation during the program period.
How Can I Register? (CLOSED)
All Students
- Register for the course:
- Visit www.stonybrook.edu/summer/ and select Extended Session 2 (June 29 - Aug. 13, 2015)
- Print and sign the permission form for audio/video recording, which can be found at this address:
- Send the permission form to Dr. Andrea Fedi, at the LLRC address listed below.
High School Students

- It is also important for parents to understand that this is a college course and their son/daughter will be in the same classroom with college students that may be several years older.
Graduate Students
- If you are a graduate student, and you are interested in one of these classes, please contact Dr. Andrea Fedi to discuss options available to you for registering.
Are There Scholarship Opportunities?
Up to 4 students in each of the four languages (16 in total) will receive scholarships to cover the cost of tuition, fees, and textbooks for these courses, which are designed to prepare students for continued study of those languages both here and abroad.
The deadline for 2015 scholarship applications is April 30, 2015.
Scholarship awards will be announced via email at the beginning of May.
Application Materials
Students who are interested in applying for a scholarship for summer study should also submit:
- A one-page personal statement explaining why they are interested in studying this language during the summer.
- School transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable for screening).
- Two (2) letters of recommendation from current or former teachers/professors, who can attest to their academic preparation and potential.
Note: The personal statement and the transcripts should be sent by the applicant via regular mail or email. Letters of recommendation should be sent by the recommender (teacher/professor), via mail or email, to Dr. Andrea Fedi. Make sure that the applicant's full name is included in all the documents.

ARB 101: Intensive Elementary Arabic
An intensive course covering the elementary Arabic program (ARB 111, ARB 112) in one semester. This course is designed for students who have no prior knowledge of the language.

Korean
KOR 101: Intensive Elementary Korean
An intensive, 6-credit, elementary-level Korean language course that provides foundational knowledge and skills including pronunciation, basic everyday conversational proficiency, principles of character formation, basic grammatical rules, and basic cultural norms and preferences that govern language use. Drawing upon a communicative approach, this course situates oral and written language in real-life contexts and promotes learner-centered, interactive classroom activities. This course is designed for students who have no prior knowledge of the language. A student who has had two or more years of Korean in high school (or who has otherwise acquired an equivalent proficiency) may not take KOR 101 without written permission from the supervisor of the course. May not be taken for credit after any other course in Korean.
