The Office of Equity and Access (OEA) serves the Stony Brook University Community - from Southampton to Main Campus to Manhattan and all Stony Brook University programs or activities. Our goal is to ensure Stony Brook University's commitment to work and educational environments that are safe, accessible, and free from discrimination.

Returing to the Workplace: August 2021

As you are most likely aware, Stony Brook University is preparing for employees who have been able to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic to return to the workplace in August 2021.   While we are excited for all of us to be working together again and for the return to in-person instruction for most of our students, we understand that many employees may have questions and concerns, including those with medical issues or impairments that COVID-19 may impact.  Employees who have concerns based on medical issues or impairments may be entitled to an accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Office of Equity and Access is charged with processing employees' ADA Accommodation Requests.  Supervisors are often the front line in handling these types or concerns and requests.  We want to make sure that you are ready to assist all of your employees that may need an accommodation.  As a result we have scheduled four upcoming sessions and we have prepared an online informational program.   More information regarding both can be found below.

Overview and Q & A on Accommodation Requests

We have scheduled four live sessions for July and August to allow supervisors to get an overview of the accommodation process and have the opportunity to ask OEA staff members about the accommodation process.   The sessions are scheduled for:

  • Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at 1 PM
  • Friday July 30, 2021 at 10 AM
  • Wednesday, August 4, at 3 PM
  • Friday, August 20 at 10 AM

These sessions will be conducted via Zoom and will be approximately 1 hour each.  This program is for supervisors only.   Please register if you are an interested supervisor (with direct reports).

Online Program Available

For those who are unable to attend the live sessions or would like information but do not have direct reports, we have also posted to our website an interactive version of our Training Program presented October 15, 2021 as part of our efforts to commemorate National Disability Employment Awareness month.

This program is online / on demand program. The program reviews the requirement for accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Stony Brook's Interactive Process for handling accommodation requests. It also allows the user to go through a series of interactive scenarios mimicking likely accommodation situations to get feel for how the process works and what the supervisor's role should be. This program is open to all campus community members. You can participate at anytime.
