LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the historical role of the news media and the relevance of news to democracy.

2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the principles of freedom of speech and press and the broad legal framework of which they are part.

3. Students will demonstrate the ability to report and write news stories that meet professional standards of verification, accuracy, clarity and fairness.

4. Students will demonstrate the ability to think critically and apply sound judgment to both words and images.

5. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the ethical standards of journalism.

6. Students will demonstrate the ability to identify and use multiple and diverse sources.

7. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of reporters, photographers, editors, news directors and producers in the evolving landscapes of print, broadcast and online news.

8. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the changing nature of the business of journalism.

9. Students will demonstrate the ability to use photography, video, audio, social media and other technologies in the gathering, presentation and dissemination of news.
