Philosophy M.A.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Upon completion of the degree, students should have gained a better acquaintance with the history and practice of art, as well as the philosophical background that expands their grasp of the larger issues at stake in aesthetics.

2. Offering courses in the actual creation of art, to be taught by practicing artists and not only by philosophers of art. Short of this, our students should be able to take courses in nearby institutions that focus on issues of concrete creation of art (e.g., at Pratt Institute or Parsons School of Design) and to gain credit for taking such courses.

3. Upon completion of the degree, students should be able to proceed on to any of several objectives: doctoral work in philosophy with an emphasis on art; enrollment in art school; training in museum curatorship; writing essays on art as an independent art critic and theorist.

4. Upon completion of the degree, students should be able to submit the most promising papers to conferences in the philosophy of art.

5. Upon completion of the degree, students should be able to proceed to advanced graduate work in art, art history, and art theory.
