PCS Program Participant Guide

Housing 

  1. Participants will reside in suite-style, air-conditioned rooms housing 3-6 individuals in mostly double occupancy bedrooms. Suites are separated by gender: male, female, and Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH).

  3. While linens are included, participants are expected to make their beds themselves upon arrival to the program. In addition, participants are expected to keep their space and all common areas clean, remove trash and linens prior to departure.
  4. Participants will be accompanied by peer mentors at least 18 years old and two years older than the general participant at all times. Peer mentors are responsible for addressing participants' needs, engagements, and concerns.
  5. Housing/Roommate Preferences: Participants are not allowed to select their roommates. Housing assignments are based on gender, age, course, etc. 

 

Housing Rules and Regulations

  1. Campus Residences reserves the right to dismiss any participant engaging in inappropriate or destructive behavior.
  2. Participants must abide by the Pre-College Summer Program Code of Conduct.
  3. No participant shall attempt to engage in conduct that, if completed, would result in the violation of any University rule or policy, including the Pre-College Summer Program Code of Conduct.
  4. No participant shall aid, help, or otherwise assist another in violating any applicable rules, including the Pre-College Summer Program Code of Conduct.
  5. Campus Residences shall not be liable to any injury to the resident(s) or guest(s) or damages to any personal property caused by water, rain, fire, steam, sewer, pipes, plumbing, stoves, refrigerators, laundry machines, dryers, or anything else that is beyond the control of Campus Residences. Liability for risks or injury and/or damage to personal property are expressly assumed by the resident.
  6. Participants residing in apartments/rooms/suites with vacancies must ensure that the unassigned space and furniture remain vacant for new participants.
  7. Do not prop external doors or enter/exit through balconies.
  8. Do not block fire equipment or exits.
  9. Engaging in any activity that will injure, deface, or damage any part of the apartments/residence hall facilities, issued appliances, and furniture is prohibited.
  10. Youth participants should work with peer mentors for any needs involving their program, issues with travel to or from campus, or being signed out by a legal guardian or authorized individual.
  11. Youth are not permitted to share bedrooms or restrooms with adults. 
  12. Restrictive Hours: All participants must be in their assigned campus residence building no later than 10:00pm and in their assigned room no later than 10:00pm.
  13. Quiet Hours: Participants must respect the rules of the quiet hours that are in effect from 10:00 pm to 7:00 am.
  14. Visitation Standards: Mixed-gender visitation is not allowed in participant rooms at any time.
  15. Alcohol, tobacco, vape pens/e-cigarettes and drugs (with the exception of prescription and over-the-counter medications approved for use by a parent/legal guardian and heaprogram-issuprogram-issuedhibited on campus.
  16. Participants must wear their program issued lanyard and ID at all times.


Provided Items

  1. Community kitchen with microwave are located in every residence hall.
  2. Laundry rooms are located in every residence hall.
  3. Twin XL Sheets
  4. Twin XL Blanket
  5. Pillow
  6. Pillowcase
  7. Medium & large sized towel
  8. Limited toiletries may be available upon request.


What to Bring With You

  1. Hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap, hair comb/brush, toiletries, cosmetics, etc.)

  2. Backpack and/or other bags
  3. Electronics (laptop, chargers, speakers, headphones, surge protectors, etc.)
  4. Snacks
  5. Reusable water bottle
  6. Any daily medications the participant takes with a self-locking medical bag. Please note: All medications must be self administered by the participant as Pre-Collegiate Summer staff is unable to assist with the administration of medications. Participants are not allowed, under any circumstances, to share medications with other participants.
  7. Health Insurance: It is required that each participant have U.S. based medical insurance while attending the Stony Brook University Pre-College Summer Programs. Pre-College Summer does not provide medical insurance or recommendations and cannot assist families in obtaining medical insurance.
  8. Participants will need to bring a physical copy of their health insurance card while attending the program along with a debit or credit card for any co-pays they may encounter at urgent care or the emergency room.

 

Prohibited Items

  1. Extension cords
  2. Lighting
  3. LED light bulbs
  4. Space heaters and portable air conditioners
  5. Plug in air fresheners
  6. Foam/gel mattress toppers
  7. Non-authorized furniture
  8. Candles or incense
  9. Tobacco or vape products, including e-cigarettes
  10. Alcohol
  11. Drugs (with the exception of prescription and over-the-counter medications approved for use by a parent/legal guardian and healthcare provider)
  12. Pets (including emotional support animals)




WiFi 

Participant WiFi is available through the WolfieNet-Guest network. The default registration is for a three day period from the time of registration. Participants staying more than three days will have to re-register after their first guest pass expires. Participants having issues with wifi can email guest_wifi_request@stonybrook.edu or schedule an appointment for service at one of the tech stations.


Health and Safety

  1. Residential building external doors are locked and controlled by an electronic card access system. Youth participants will not be issued electronic access cards unless otherwise agreed upon by Conference Housing and the Conference Host. 
  2. If an emergency exists that requires police assistance or medical treatment, University Police should be contacted at their emergency dispatch: (631) 632-3333. Youth participants should involve chaperones and housing staff as soon as possible in these situations. 
  3. No person shall refuse to observe any safety regulations or procedures. 
  4. Fire Safety, University Police, and/or Campus Residences staff may enter rooms during fire alarms to ensure compliance with evacuation procedures. 
  5. The University reserves the right to require that prohibited items are removed immediately from the apartments/residence halls.
  6. Individuals not registered for housing are not permitted in residential buildings. Family, legal guardians, or designee of legal guardians are allowed in residential buildings during check-in and check-out periods only.



Room Changes

  1. As a campus committed to promoting diversity, room change requests that derive from a lack of respect for others on the basis of race, creed, color, disability, national origin, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, or status as a disabled or United States veteran, will not be considered or approved.
  2. Participants cannot force another resident to room change or swap for any reason, such as their behavior, incompatibility as roommates, or desire for a different person to live with them. 
  3. Participants who move without prior approval will be directed to return to their assigned space, and may lose their space in the program.





Dining

All meals are eaten in campus dining facilities that are managed by Stony Brook Dining Services. The dining hall used by Pre College Summer, East Side Dining, offers a variety of fresh and nutritious meal selections. All dining halls offer vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free, halal, and kosher options. SBU Dining will make every effort to accommodate any allergy needs.

 

Climate and Clothing

Individual tolerances for heat and cold vary considerably so the following are merely guidelines. Participants from tropical climates may consider warm sweaters to be essential, even in summer, as most public buildings are air conditioned from May through September.

Summer in Stony Brook (June through September): 

    • Temperature: 50-90 degrees Fahrenheit, 10-32 degrees Celsius
    • Clothing: Wear light clothing for hot days and light jackets for cool nights.



 

Visitors 

Participants may not have any visitors during the duration of the Program.

 

Cars and Parking

Participants are not permitted to park a vehicle on campus during the Program.

 

Directions to Campus 

Stony Brook University is situated on a 1,039-acre site (see campus maps) on the north shore of Long Island in southeastern New York. We are approximately 60 miles east of New York City. The program is unable to provide transportation to and from the airport at this time.

  • BY CAR:From New York City, take the Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) eastbound from the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan or the Throgs Neck Bridge or Whitestone Bridge in Queens to exit 62, and follow Nicolls Road (Route 97) north for 9 miles. The main entrance to the University is on the left. To find the campus via GPS, enter the address "100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790."
  • BY TRAIN:Take the Long Island Railroad's Port Jefferson line from Penn Station in Manhattan to Stony Brook. The LIRR station is at the north end of the campus; bus service to the central campus is provided. Trains to and from Penn generally require transfers at Jamaica or Huntington. Hicksville is also a transfer point on some lines.
  • BY FERRY: Car ferries cross Long Island Sound at Bridgeport, Connecticut to Port Jefferson, Long Island. Take Route 25A west to Nicolls Road, and turn left on Nicolls. The University entrances are the first three intersections you come to. From New London, Connecticut to Orient Point, Long Island, take Route 25A west to Nicolls Road and proceed as above.
  • BY PLANE: Long Island's Islip-MacArthur Airport is 16 miles from the campus and is serviced by direct flights by major airlines and commuter lines. New York City Area Airports (JFK, LaGuardia and Newark) are approximately 50 miles to the west. From Kennedy Airport, you can take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station and transfer to the Long Island Railroad for the train to Stony Brook (take the Port Jefferson line).

    Driving Directions from Long Island MacArthur Airport: Exit the airport and turn left onto Veterans Memorial Highway (Route 454 West). Merge onto Sunrise Highway (Route 27) and take the second exit onto Nicolls Road. Drive north for 12 miles. The main entrance to the University is on the left.





Local Accommodations

If family members and/or relatives will be traveling to campus to drop off or pick up their participant and spending the night in the area, there are several options for overnight accommodations. (Please note: Participants are not allowed to have visitors during the program).

Hilton Garden Inn:
The Hilton Garden Inn is located directly on campus. When making a reservation, please call (631) 941-2980 and request the Stony Brook Visitor Rate. Each room offers a microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, and complimentary wireless internet. The hotel offers complimentary shuttle transportation from the Stony Brook train station, Port Jefferson and Stony Brook Villages, and Smith Haven Mall.

Holiday Inn:
The Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook is located less than 2 miles from the Stony Brook University campus. The hotel offers free shuttle service to and from Stony Brook University, Stony Brook University Hospital, and Stony Brook Train Station. The rate includes a free hot breakfast buffet and free wireless internet. To make a reservation, call 1-800-HOLIDAY or go to the website IHG.com and request the Stony Brook University discount rate. 



Security

It is the responsibility of each resident to assist the University in providing protection for persons and property. Residents are required to carry their room key(s) and program-issued ID card with them at all times, to lock bedroom and apartment/suite doors whenever exiting, and to report lost or missing keys or access cards immediately.


In order to provide additional building security, Campus Residences enforces the following policies:

  1. No person shall use or possess any key to an apartment/residence hall or to any lock within an apartment/residence hall that they are not specifically authorized to use or possess. 
  2. No person shall enter any apartment/residence hall area that is not intended for the use of residents or their guests (e.g. unoccupied residential rooms/spaces, attics, storage areas, roofs, equipment rooms) without the permission of the Assistant Vice President for Campus Residences, or their designee. Nor shall any person assist the unauthorized entry of any person into any restricted area.
  3. No person shall attempt to deny other residents the use of furnishings or facilities intended to be available in or assigned for the use and benefit of those residents. 
  4. The Residential Safety Program (RSP) provides staff that patrols the interior and exterior of all residential buildings. In addition, individuals that would like to avoid walking alone throughout campus may request a WALK by calling RSP directly at 631-632-WALK (9255) from personal phones or 2-9255 from on-campus phones.
