How To Look for – And Remove – Holds
What Is a Hold?
A "hold" is an administrative requirement that students must resolve by logging into SOLAR. (If you don't remember how to log-in, here's how to do it.) All students will eventually have a hold on their account that they will need to remove because it will prevent them from enrolling. An example of this could be signing the Financial Responsibility Statement, or indicating your COVID vaccination status. Some holds are labeled "non-impact," and therefore will not need your action.
WHAT IS A NON-IMPACT HOLD?
"Non-impact" holds function as FYIs. These are holds that will prevent most people from enrolling, but not you, if you have an exemption. Our fully online and off-campus cohort students will often be exempt from regulations, so they don't need to resolve the hold. If, however, a student takes courses on campus, they have different obligations and their previous non-impact holds will change into impact holds that need their attention.
To sum up: If you see a "non-impact" hold, you don't need to do anything because it won't stop you from enrolling.
What About COVID Vaccination Holds?
COVID holds are impact holds. According to the Stony Brook's Student FAQs: Vaccine and Testing Information Website:
As previously communicated, given the vaccine approval, per New York State policy, all SUNY students who are enrolled in at least one in-person class OR use an in-person campus service or facility are now required to submit proof of their COVID vaccination. Even if you don't come to campus, you will need to sign a document that indicates your vaccination record/status to be eligible to enroll in classes. When you log into SOLAR, look at the bottom right side of your home page to find the link to submit the information. (Emphasis added.)
All students affected by this hold were sent an email from Student Affairs explaining the policy, but here is an excerpt that may be of particular interest to SPD students:
"If you are a fully online student or distance learning and will not be living on campus or accessing in-person campus services or facilities on Stony Brook University’s campuses in the Winter and Spring 2022 semesters, please fill out this form. Upon our team’s review of this attestation, your SOLAR registration hold will be removed within two days." (Emphasis added.)
Please visit the Student FAQs: Vaccine and Testing Information Website for details, as well as a tutorial for submitting the information.
If you have any questions, please email vaccinations@stonybrook.edu. SPD does not place or manage the COVID hold.
How Do I Remove a Hold?
First, log into SOLAR and check the "Action Center" in the top left corner of the home page. It will look like this:
If you have a hold, simply click on the "View Details" link and follow the directions to take action to resolve it. Again, if it says "non-impact" you do not need to take action.
