Veterans Success Stories
Esther Kwon
"I am a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and this is my story. I served for 8 years from 2005 to 2013 in Alpha Company, 6th Communications Battalion in the Marine Corps Reserves. I was deployed in 2009 to Al-Taqaddum, Iraq and served as Platoon Sergeant charged with deactivating communications on the base to prepare for our eventual withdrawal of troops. I have gained a world of experience from the Marine Corps, which has changed my life forever. I invite you to read about some of my most life-changing experiences in 'Memories of a Female Marine'.
"I graduated from Stony Brook University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Arts. The Post 9/11 GI Bill was introduced halfway into my college career and I was fortunate enough to be able to experience some of its benefits. There is no greater 'thank you' than being able to attend school with no worries of tuition, rent, and books. Returning from a combat zone is a stressful transition for many military veterans and the financial assistance gave me one less thing to worry about. During college, I worked at Stony Brook University's Office of Veterans Affairs where I assisted other veterans in receiving their VA education benefits. I now work for Kimco Realty Corporation as a Design Specialist where I use the artistic skills I learned at Stony Brook University in a professional setting."
