Here are some of our faculty’s most recent recognitions and awards:

Dima Kozakov and Haibin Ling

Professor Kozakov and Ling Honored

We extend our congratulations to Dima Kozakov and Haibin Ling for being named 2024 Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers. Seven faculty members from Stony Brook University have been recognized on the 2024 Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list, an honor that places them among the top 1 percent of researchers worldwide.

Kozakov, a professor of Applied Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, received recognition in Biology and Biochemistry.

Ling, a SUNY Empire Innovation Professor in Computer Science in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, was honored in Engineering.

Tony Scarlatos and Maya Koga Endoh

Professors Scarlatos and Koga Recognized with Chancellor Awards

Professor Tony Scarlatos of the Department of Computer Science is the recipient of a SUNY Chancellor Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Professor Maya Koga Endoh of the Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering is the recipient of a SUNY Chancellor Award for Adjunct Teaching. The Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence are system-level honors conferred to acknowledge and provide system-wide recognition for consistently superior professional achievement and to encourage the ongoing pursuit of excellence. Twenty-seven members of Stony Brook University’s faculty and staff have received the 2023-2024 State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence. Congratulations to Professor Scarlatos and Professor Koga!

Andrew Singer in The Space

Dean Andrew Singer Interviewed by TBR News Media

Andrew Singer, dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, was interviewed by TBR News Media. In the article, Singer states that his goal for CEAS is to see the school increase "from 5,000 total students, including 3,500 undergraduates, to as many as 10,000 students." He believes that this growth is possible because there is high demand for an education from Stony Brook University's College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

News 12 Interviewed Professor Farhadzadeh

News 12 recently interviewed Ali Farhadzadeh, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, about the recent storm's affect on Long Island's infrastructure, particularly in Glen Cove.

Professor Farhadzadeh’s research interests focus on nearshore hydrodynamics, coastal processes and beach morphology, wave-structure interaction, resilient coastal protection systems, storm surge and wave modeling and coastal flooding and inundation. He is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) with several years of industry experience both in the US and abroad.

Niranjan Balasubramanian, Michael Ferdman, and Erez Zadok

Three SBU Faculty Awarded SUNY-IBM AI Research Alliance Grants

Professor Erez Zadok, Professor Michael Ferdman, and Professor Niranjan Balasubramanian of the Department of Computer Science were among 14 researchers from the State University of New York’s four university centers who have been awarded 2024 SUNY-IBM AI Research Alliance grants. The alliance is part of a partnership between New York State and IBM to create a global research hub for developing next-generation AI hardware. The awarded grants fund projects ranging from cloud computing to sustainable energy to optimizing the next generation of supercomputers.

Professors Balasubramanian, Ferdman and Zadok are working to develop tools and solutions for efficient execution of large-scale AI systems encompassing both hardware and software-based approaches toward reducing system costs and enhancing performance, while dramatically improving their energy requirements and carbon footprint, which is the single largest challenge of the current AI revolution.

 Wei Li

Newsday Interviewed Professor Li

Newsday recently interviewed Professor Li of the Department of Civil Engineering in regard to the possible repairs and restoration after the extreme rainfall. The storm caused much damage including the destruction of a section of Harbor Road which caused the failure of the dam and draining of Mill Pond in Stony Brook.

Professor Li, a civil engineer and geoscientist, has a strong interest in the geosystems that sustain the life and infrastructure above; and host water, wastes, and resources within. The overarching goal of his research is to advance the engineering of geosystems in the context of climate change, infrastructure resilience, and energy and water resources.
