Requirements

• Academic Advisor: assigned in student's area of interest before registration. Students receiving financial aid must select a thesis research advisor before the start of their second semester.
• Academic Standing: maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in all coursework
• Coursework and Research:
  • A minimum of 24 credits of approved graduate coursework beyond the MS degree
  • A preliminary examination
  • A qualifying examination
  • A dissertation
  • A final oral examination

• Can I use an unofficial transcript for my initial application?

  • Yes, unofficial transcripts are acceptable for the initial application process. However, if admitted, you'll need to submit final official transcripts.

• Is the GRE required?

  • The GRE General Test is optional for Spring 2024 and Fall 2024 admissions. Use test code 2548 (Civil Engineering code: 1102) if you choose to take it.

• Do I need to submit an English proficiency test if I am a citizen of a country where English is the official language?

  • If English is not your first language, you need to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores unless you have a degree from a school where English was the language of instruction, are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, or have been a Teaching Assistant at a school where English was the language of instruction.

Is it necessary to contact a faculty member before applying to grad school?

• Contacting a faculty member is not mandatory but can be beneficial. It helps in building connections with potential advisors.

• Can I apply for a direct PhD program with only a bachelor's degree?

  • Yes, you can apply if you have a relevant bachelor's degree, meet the GPA requirement, and have completed required coursework.

• How can I inquire about an application fee waiver?

Application Status

1. Once you click the "Finalize Application" button, your application is reviewed and a decision is made by the Civil Engineering Graduate Admissions Committee. The Slate portal will be updated.
2. If your application is recommended for admission by CIV, it will proceed to the Graduate School for review and a final decision will be made. The Slate portal will be updated.
3. Please continue to check the Slate portal for information on your application status and admission decision.
4. Your application will be placed on hold and you will be notified if any action is required regarding transcripts, degree conferrals, test scores, and/or letters of recommendation.

Due to the high volume of Fall applications, we kindly ask that you refrain from sending multiple emails or calling the department to check on the status of your application until after April 15. All offer letters will be sent electronically to the email address you provided in Slate. Please ensure that your application includes a correct and current email address. If you do not receive an offer letter or any notification by April 15, please feel free to contact the Acting Graduate Program Coordinator Malina Salman at malina.salman@stonybrook.edu.
