The Stony Brook Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) separate private entity. It was incorporated on February 24, 1965 to assist in advancing the welfare and development of the State University of New York at Stony Brook by accepting and encouraging gifts to this corporation and by using such gifts to advance such purposes in a manner consistent with the educational policies of the State University of New York.

The Foundation by-laws state that a Board of Trustees shall manage the property, affairs, business and concerns of the Foundation.

The Foundation's legal and fiduciary responsibility includes protecting the privacy of its donors. Therefore, the Foundation's policy is not to make public statements or comment on individual donations or donors.

The Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) applies to records held by any governmental entity performing a governmental or proprietary function of the state.
