In honor of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11th), the Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS) at Stony Brook University is thrilled to launch an exciting challenge to celebrate the incredible scientific and engineering achievements of women. We invite enthusiastic young minds with a passion for STEM to conduct an experiment and showcase it in an engaging video format.

Submission Deadline: January 16, 2024

Final: February 7, 2024, 4:00 - 6:00 PM.

Participant Instructions

  1. Explore Scientist/Engineer Accomplishments: 
    • Discover the achievements of various scientists using the Accomplishments/Experiments Gallery below.
    • Choose a scientist/engineer whose work interests and inspires you.
  2. Experiment Selection:
    • Select an experiment related to the scientist/engineer’s work.
    • Experiments are available for all age groups, from elementary to high school students.
  3. Recording Guidelines:
    • Create a video showcasing what you have learned and highlight about the selected scientist/engineering and demonstrating your experiment.
    • Videos must be no longer than 60 seconds.
  4. Submission:
    • Fill out the submission form HERE where you will need to share the link to your video with us.
    • The submission deadline is January 16, 2024.

Eligibility

    • Be a student in K-12 education.
    • Each student can only participate in one submission.
    • Teams of at most three participants are allowed.
    • Parental consent must be filled out at the time of submission to proceed with the video uploading.

Competition

    • Phase 1: A committee of researchers in fields related to the proposed challenges will select ten finalists. The submission deadline for this phase is January 16, 2024.
    • Phase 2: Finalists will be invited to participate in a live presentation of their video at a campus event on February 7, 2024, from 4:00 - 6:00 PM, where the winners will be announced.

Prizes

    • Finalists: All finalists will receive a certificate of accomplishment and a small prize to reward their efforts.
    • Top 3: In addition to a certificate, the top three finalist teams will be awarded monetary prizes to be split amongst team members as follows:

First Place: $1000

Second Place: $750

Third Place: $500
